Buchanan-Haralson Public Library

Friends of the Library

Greetings from President John Norton

I would like to take this time to thank everyone who has offered their support in our dream to make the library thrive and prosper. The fruit from your efforts blossoms daily through the use of the library by your fellow residents. Please keep up the good work and know you are treasured.

Members

Friends currently have over fifty members. However, attendance at recent meetings has been scarce. Friends need all members to play an active role in our on-going efforts to strengthen the library.

Quick Note from Fundraising Chair Therresa

It’s been a great summer, but its time to get back to work and raise money for the Buchanan Haralson Public Library. Our first two fundraisers will be held simultaneously during the Fair on the Square, Saturday, September 17th. FOTL will host a BBQ with mostly presold tickets. Adults are $5.00 and children twelve and under are $3.50. But of course, if you get there and don’t have a ticket, we’ll still sell you a plate. Keep in mind there will also be a book sale, which not only raises money but also puts affordable books into the hands of those in the community. The fundraising committee will be calling members and others to help make this event a great one for FOTL. Join us and together we can make a difference.

Fundraising

Friends have been busy in the past few months trying to recruit NEW friends and raise money.

Mini book sales were hosted at Wal-mart and at the library on April 30 and May 7 raising more than $100.00. However, volunteers quickly surpassed that amount at the Buchanan Fair on the Square May 21. This event not only helped rid the library of boxes of books but also netted about $500.00 and several new members.

Upcoming fundraiser plans include but are not limited to a barbeque, a Little Theatre group performance, a raffle and an auction.

Don’t forget--the barbeque will be held Sept. 17 at the library in Buchanan. Lots of volunteers are needed and would be greatly appreciate in order to make this a major fundraiser for friends.

Goals

Our goals are and will continue to revolve around gathering folks who would like to help the Buchanan Library in its quest to provide services for both the young and old.

From the start:

Friends of the Buchanan Haralson Library began organizing as a group from two initial meetings. On Saturday morning, Jan. 22, 2005 and Tuesday night, Jan. 25 meetings were held at the library. These gatherings were conducted by Roni Tewksbury, who is the assistant director of the West Georgia Regional Library system and an active member of the Neva Lomason branch of Friends of the library. Thirteen folks from the two meetings agreed to compose a steering committee to officially organize friends. Roni was instrumental in helping Friends get off the ground. We must take this moment to let our members know she is worthy of praise for her relentless efforts.

Once, up and going so to speak, a kick-off community meeting to begin membership was held on April 4. Local officials were in attendance as well as nearly 100 other guests. The meeting offered Friends the chance to present our group to others and recognize some key people who have been advocates for the library.

REMEMBER

Turn in potential articles for publication by the 20th of each month. Thanks for all your help!
